Choosing non competitive keywords and LSI for success
Posted in Keyword Research by admin 2 CommentsOk so we got involved in the keyword selection for the website (soon to be commercial site) built around “handbags”. This is day 2 but by no means is it the pace you should be going at or slowing down to, depending on what it is you set for daily goals etc. I am simply making a site, using all the tools that are readily available out there, with free information and open source code to make this all work. The only expense I am incurring here, is of course, the server space I am on, (which other ventures cover the expense for) so here we go…(*I am also willing to GIVE away subdomains and hosting off freddybeach.com to get ANYONE who wants to try this stuff out)
Ok.. back to the keywords and LSI…(latent symantic indexing) Yesterday on a rough or ground search of the word “handbags”, the overture search tool came back with approximately 100 words that relate to handbags.. Steering away from the top 10-20 or so really competitve ones, today I dove deeper with the Nichebot v2 program ($1 14 day trial), to look at this new phenomenon known in the marketing world as LSI. Basically LSI research is important on a lot of levels, but moreso by giving you, the website owner/marketer a whole new set of keywords and phrases that make sense to your original “keywords”. Ill give an example: I initially was off to make a site on handbags. The site, at the outset was to be an information site/blog site that had the word handbag in the domain somehow. Next, I had to look into the keywords I was going to focus on, without trying to compete with the giants in established industry.
So that’s where yesterday’s searching led me to. Basically choosing less competitive keywords, “women’s handbags” and “quilted handbags”.
These words are awesome for the site and if anyone types these in at a major engine like google or yahoo, then I hope Im fortunate enough to have a top 10 spot and some catchy headings so lure them to my site…
But those keywords aren’t enough. Not even close! So what am I going to do about this? Well, it’s time to look into this whole LSI phenomenon…I want lateral and even errant or accidental traffic to stumble on my site, but only those surfers who are searching for something very similar in nature to what it is I am offering on my site.. Heck.. My content will be based on these terms and phrases, so how could an interested surfer not want to “read up” or “buy” once they see this content rich site? Well my handbag site isn’t going to be limited to “womens handbags” and “quilted handbags”. LSI research compiles monster lists of keywords/phrases and catch-all phrases like “black leather hobo bags”, “bridal evening bags”, “carrying bags”, “cheap bags”, “designer shoulder bags”, “embroidered bags”, “marilyn monroe bags” and many many more.. So do you see where this could all be going? These 100’s upon thousands of keyword phrases that people search everyday, could well be what seperates my handbag from the rest of the average ones. In no way do I expect to compete with the largest commercial sites out there, but a piece of their action would certainly be nice…
The keyword and lsi research can be initially done on your own, using overture search tools, and others (here are some links – keyworddiscovery, overture (same thing really) . I felt at this point, a little overwhelmed, so I took Jim Morris up on his 14 day guarantee for his product, called Niche Bot Version 2… This is a very intruiging site with many features, so call me a sucker, I signed up for $1 yesterday and am now learning a lot inside his memners area. This 14 days will be busy for me learning, but I am planning on getting as much out of it as I can so I can decide then if its worth the monthly fee of $19.95. (plus addons, everything you do inside the members area pretty much costs credits.. the more LSI searches you perform, the more credits you burn etc…) You can read all about his site at www.nichebot.com .. Signup for his newsletter he is a very smart guy.
I am going to shorten up the post now on LSI and keyword research, simply because I’m assuming you get the drift by now. If not here are plenty of websites out there that will more then likely overload you on the topics.. Just remember. Free is good, and you can do this “important” and fun work on your own, so don’t be fooled by marketing ploys at this level.. It’s YOUR decision from here on in and noone can run your business. Its hard work, but it will pay off. Noone will make you rich quick, it just doesn’t work that way.
(here is a freebie I played around with…)
download good keywords
Tomorrow (or saturday) we are going to go through the domain selection phase and initial setup of the blog for the informational site we are building around “handbags”. This is going to be packed with good information so be sure to check it out.

I find a lot of people aren’t trusting overture as much for keywords. Wordtracker’s new tool that aligns itself with google trends has been shown to be highly accurate in helping to isolate keyword and keyword trends. Check it out, it’s pretty amazing: http://freekeywords.wordtracker.com/gtrends/
I’m not sure if you’ve heard of the 30 day challenge or not, but it has tons of great free lesson plans on seo and niche marketing in today’s web 2.0 world. It’s also been a great networking tool. http://www.thirtydaychallenge.com/
I found your blog by doing a local search for marketers and blogs. Sadly it would appear that most of the big local marketing companies are not blogging here in Freddy Beach.

thanks a lot for adding the info. I have since changed directions about what I am going to do here, I have been developping for years in many different markets online.. There are so many options and soooo many ways to get sidetracked, it’s best if you can make a plan and stick with it, so I am going to do that with these 2 small contracts I have recently acquired
Feel free to email me or leave more comments as I go along, I would be interested in knowing what you do for work from home
Cheers
