Soo…. you have a website..You may have an info site, you may have an ecommerce site, or anything in between. Many people these days begin with a site that is more personal in nature, but then evolves into something more…
Myself, I have gone through all the stages of not really having a plan in place before I’ve embarked on certain projects. It’s generally accepted these days, that can be your downfall, but for me I don’t always think this is the case. WHAT is your website’s intention? Are you selling something, at least an adsense banner from google? If so, … then this is where I seperate myself from some advisors. “do what you love, and the money will follow” doesn’t always apply on the web. Especially when you search a popular term that interests you (say golf for example at google) and you get over 19 million results.. What to do.. Narrow it down? Well you could… You could find that golf tees or golf spikes or golf hats are far less popular then golf clubs, balls and courses, but that also means far less competitive and quite possibly a niche that hasn’t been acknowledged yet. From the golf example above, check out this page (the Keyword SEO tool). Consider this step more of a “brainstorming” step. You may end up with a completely different marketing plan for your website from this step, or you may well even change your mind on what it is you were planning to sell online. Bottom line, NOW is a good time to sort out what it is you are going to pursue in your venture.
For me, I have put very little thought or research into this, but I am going to try to build site(s) around “handbags”. The term handbags, from an SEO perspective, is a very popular keyword, so I am going to begin by searching it in the keyword seo tool now…
Ok from this broad search, I have eliminated a lot of results near the top, as the competitveness is very high. Don’t let this tool tell you the whole story either, there are other ways to search… You can goto google, yahoo and msn (major search engines) and do your own searches to see results..
Ok so for the purpose of going through with the initial research on handbags, here is a cut image of the results. (handbags keywords results)
Ok so from what you can see, I am now beginning to choose my area or niche within the realm of handbags… At the moment, Im interested but not following up on things such as prada, ripoff, knockoffs etc… I am going with the terms that will apply to my site and on my site, I will have HAND made or custom made handbags, so these 2 are good examples of reasonable keywords…
